Malawi is an ideal destination for both families and individuals on safari and combines well with some-time on the beach on Lake Malawi.

This country, known as the warm heart of Africa, beats at its own leisurely pace and offers an easily accessible alternative to the Indian Ocean beaches and combines well with a safari in Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa too.

Lake Malawi, a clear freshwater lake, is vast, almost a sea, and contains many tropical fish and offers unique freshwater scuba diving. There are simple to luxury beach hotels, romantic honeymoon lodges, delightfully relaxed family oriented hotels and fishing lodges available depending on your exact requirement. Some lodges have dhows, sailing boats and even luxury catamarans and nearly all offer good water sports and diving. Canoeing in kayaks is also popular in the south of the lake where there is a series of small islands creating a perfect water safari circuit.

Kaya Mawa, Nkwichi (Moz) and Pumalani are all small upmarket boutique style lodges providing seclusion, good service with imaginative accommodation and excellent beach activities. All these are ideal for a stylish break or even a romantic honeymoon. Fishing for tigerfish is popular and sailing, diving, waterskiing and canoeing are available throughout the region.

4×4 Safaris in Malawi are available in the south at Mkulumadzi and Mvuu in the Liwonde National Park, in the west on Vwaza Marsh at Kazuni and on the Nyika Plateau at Nyika Lodge in the highlands (5000 ft), a particularly beautiful location with large herds of Zebra and Eland and some notable birds.

Safaris in the nearby and excellent Luangwa National Park, in Zambia, combine extremely well with beach and activity holidays on Lake Malawi.
