Luangwa National Park The ecology of the Luangwa Valley is extraordinary: dramatic seasonal variations, a dynamic river system, fertile soils, lush vegetation, prolific wildlife, a perpetual contest between the elements, hunter and prey. These inter-related ingredients comprise the Luangwa Valley and engender its unique atmosphere. The Luangwa is home to most of the big game - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and hippo are abundant. It is notable for two endemic species: Thorneycroft's Giraffe and Cookson's Wildebeest. Black rhino, although once common, are sadly no longer seen. There are few, if any, rivers in Africa that contain such a high concentration of hippos and crocodiles. Night drives reveal many fascinating mammals including civet, genet, mongooses, bushbaby, serval, porcupine and aardvark. Over 400 hundred species of birds have been recorded in the Luangwa. Close to Tafika, the large flocks of Crowned Cranes and the Yellow billed stork breeding colony are incredible sights. Pel's fishing owls and Bat hawks are regularly seen. At Mwaleshi, the walking camp, bird specials include White winged babbling starlings and Fulleborn's Longclaw. |
Day 6 Today you will cross the river and walk to Chikoko or Mwaleshi Bush Camps to stay for 2 nights in elevated tree houses on stilts. Quilálea is an idyllic Mozambique island resort nestling in a forgotten corner of Mozambique's Quirimbas Archipelago in the tropical Indian Ocean. Completely uninhabited, this Indian Ocean island offers complete exclusivity and unparalleled natural beauty. Nine private villas each offer magnificent sea views, providing a malaria-free haven of luxury island accommodation. Surrounded by the sparkling, azure waters of the warm Indian Ocean, Quilálea is the ideal honeymoon destination for those in search of the perfect romantic island getaway, or the ultimate holiday for those in need of relaxation, adventure and rediscovery.
Mozambique Conservation and the Quilálea Sanctuary Situated in the southern sector of the Quirimbas Archipelago, Quilálea Island is a unique island marine sanctuary, fringed with pristine beaches and surrounded by the tropical Indian Ocean. The Quilálea Sanctuary covers 500,000 hectares and was opened in 2002. Within the sanctuary itself no fishing is allowed, except local people using traditional methods. The marine sanctuary functions as a nursery. Turtles now nest on the beach, dugongs have been sighted many times, and humpback whales shelter in the channel during the months of July to January before continuing their journey to the south. Numbers of all marine organisms are high and increasing. A total of 375 different species of fish have been identified in the sanctuary area. Conservation efforts have thus produced some of the finest diving, fishing and birding in the area. Unlike the rest of the Quirimbas Archipelago, Quilálea is malaria-free. All the water on the island is provided via a de-salination plant and stored in subterranean tanks, hence there is no open water on the island and nowhere for mosquitos to breed. |
Day 9 to 12 Relax and enjoy the privacy and comforts of this exclusive island retreat.
