Tyrconnell Mine - Heritage Gold Mine, North Queensland.

Recommended

Built in 1876, Tyrconnell takes you back through one of the most fascinating periods of Australia’s history. Hidden in rugged bush country west of Cairns, Tyrconnell was at the centre of the Hodgkinson goldfield and its most famous mine. The beautifully restored mine is testimony to those early pioneers and its owners, Andrew Bell and Cate Harley, have made it their home. Andrew’s family owned and worked the mine until the late 1990s and his experience, combined with Cate’s expertise in restoration, make this a unique insight into Australia’s early years of settlement.

No. of Bedrooms

Two Heritage cottages, built with innovative use of timber and corrugated iron to blend with their historical surroundings. Each cottage has a private sitting room opening on to a verandah, double and twin rooms each with ensuite bath/shower rooms. Power is solar generated, each cabin equipped with mosquito netting, coffee/tea facilities and reading material in the living room. Rooms are decorated with local antiques. The old mine manager’s cottage – 3 bedrooms not ensuite, is more rustic in style.

Dining

Dinner is hosted by Andrew and Cate, while breakfast can be brought to your room. Andrew’s skills in the kitchen provide excellent home-cooked cuisine. Bush picnics and sun downer drinks also feature.

Activities

Visits to nearby heritage sites provide an unparalleled insight to pioneering life. Bush walks – take in historic tracks, pioneer sites and graves, billabongs and lookouts, local flora, fauna and history. Wildlife includes Grey kangaroos, dingos and wild pigs. Horse riding in the savannah bush country on nearby Springmount Station. Gold panning in the local creek or through some of the old tailings may provide a small financial return for budding propectors! We recommend this property as it is unique, private and a fascinating insight in to the past.
