The Elephant House, Addo, South Africa

Highly Recommended

Situated in the Sundays River Valley, only minutes away from Addo Elephant National Park, this delightful lodge is surrounded by rolling lawns and indigenous trees, and offers guests all the splendour of a bygone era.  The lodge is built in a traditional thatched colonial style and all accommodation opens onto cool wrap around verandahs or colourful gardens.

The lodge has two swimming pools and there are numerous comfortable, shady sitting and lounging areas dotted around the property. The nine air-conditioned and heated rooms are spacious and comfortably furnished, and the food and service are excellent. There are also two separate, spacious family chalets.  This is a good base to explore the countryside around or to relax by the pools.

Self-drive or organised group game drives are available in the nearby Addo Reserve or a guided 4x4 morning or afternoon game drive can be booked direct from the lodge at a cost of about £40 per person.  The lodge can also organise other guided trips locally.  There are also other private reserves in the area, including Schotia, Shamwari and Amakala that do a good variety of excellent game drives in their own vehicles.  Prices vary from a few pounds for the self-drive at Addo to £50 to £100 for a half or full day in a private reserve with guide, including lunch or evening BBQ.
