Faraway Bay - Exclusive Bush Camp on the Kimberley Coast.

Recommended

A true Bush Camp in a faraway spot on the Kimberley Coast.  The Bush Camp lives up to its name and, nestled in a far corner of the Kimberley coast, Bruce and Robyn Ellison have made their home in one of Australia’s remotest and wildest spots. Eagle Lodge, the camp gathering point, is an open fronted pavilion perched on the cliff top, from where dugongs, sharks and even crocodiles can be seen in the bay below. Watching the sun descent across the ocean as it sets aglow the red sandstone cliffs of the Kimberley coast is a memorable way to spend an evening. Even more spectacular is the experience of sitting at the foot of the King George Falls as they cascade hundreds of feet from the Kimberley into the saltwaters of the gorge below before heading out to sea. There are few places in the world where you will see mighty inland rivers come crashing out from the interior of a continent and into the sea as towering waterfalls – this is one of them.

Faraway Bay

Faraway Bay - Rock Art

Bruce is one of those larger than life bush characters, whose stories from fishing and hunting days ensure a lively conversation around the table at dinner. It is his knowledge of this coastline and the surrounding bush that makes Faraway Bay a particularly special experience. Cruise along the Kimberley coast in Bruce’s 13 metre boat, Diamond Lass, and head for a picnic lunch at the foot of the King George River.  Enjoy pristine beaches and picnics at Monitor Pool, a magnificent plunge pool at the foot of imposing basalt and sandstone cliffs, and a refreshingly cool and safe place for swimming. There is time for fishing, discovering Aboriginal rock art, bird-watching, beachcombing and time for doing nothing at all!

Faraway Bay can be reached 60 minutes flight from Kununurra by light aircraft, with spectacular views of the Berkeley and King George Rivers.  From the airstrip it is a drive of a few kilometres to the camp itself.
The flight from Kununurra is usually timed to connect from the scheduled morning flight from Darwin.  Charters can also be arranged from Darwin, it is a 90 minute flight.  The camp is not accessible by road.

This camp is open from early April until the end of October.  April/May is a good time to visit while there is still a reasonable flow of water over the falls after the wet season.  Temperatures are mildest in June to August in the middle of the dry season and increase closer to either end of the wet season.

No. of BedroomsEach of the 8 bush-style cabins enjoys a 180-degree view of the ocean. While the cabins themselves are basic, they have everything required to ensure you have a comfortable stay - mosquito nets, safari chairs, and a fan give each cabin a rustic but comfortable feel. Three cabins have an ensuite shower and flusing toilet. The others have shared shower and toilet facilities located close by.
DiningThe camp has an open style kitchen and dining area with a paved terrace – just the spot for a sundowner drink as the sun descends across the ocean and sets the red sandstone cliffs aglow. Bruce hosts breakfast and dinner with dinners often being seafood or BBQ. Drinks are included and on a ‘help yourself’ basis from the fridge.
Activities

Most activities are conducted as a group from the camp and are complimentary : -
• Day cruises up the Kimberley coast to the King George River, where after the wet season the falls cascade over a hundred foot cliff into the gorge below.
• A coastal trip south of the camp to Monitor Pool, a magnificent circular plunge pool at the foot of imposing basalt and sandstone cliffs.
• Go estuary fishing along mangrove-lined creeks or reef fishing off the idyllic coral strewn Lesueur Island.
• Wildlife includes crocodiles, sharks, turtles and occasionally dugongs, which can be viewed from the camp. Wallabies, other bush wildlife and birds can be seen on bush walks behind
  the camp.
• Take a ‘dinghy taxi’ and spend the day in glorious seclusion on your very own deserted beach. Camp staff will pack a picnic basket for lunch. • Join one of the camp guides to explore the overhangs and caves for some excellent rock art, both Wandjina and Bradshaw.
• A freshwater spring fed swimming pool is built on the edge of the cliff overlooking the bay.
