Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara, nestling at the foot of the Great Rift valley escarpment, is a 125sq mile park of which two-thirds is covered with the eponymous lake. The name derives from 'emanyara' a Maasai word for the prickly euphorbia thorns which they surround their kraals and which is found in plentiful supply in the Rift Valley. The lake is believed to have been formed 2-3 million years ago and has a high soda content. This attracts large stands of flamingos which cover the lake in a pink mantel when viewed from a distance. Else where in the park there is a surprising diversity of habitats from open grasslands to hot watersprings, riverine forests and swamps to rocky outcrops, each supporting a fantastic array of wildlife with over 380 species of birds recorded. The park is also known for its large and boisterous hippo populations, baboon and several herds of elephant. Other forms of wildlife include tree climbing lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe and zebra.

Days 4-6
Game drive transfer to Manyara Airstrip and fly to Klein’s Camp, situated in the north-eastern edge of the Serengeti. You will spend three nights in a thatched cottage with en suite facilities and private terrace. Activities include game drives and nature walks in the private concession. At certain times of the year, due to the position of the great migration, we would recommend an alternative stay at Grumeti River Camp.

Serengeti National Park
Serengeti comes from the Maasai word 'siringit' meaning 'endless plains' a just title for arguably the worlds most famous game park. The park extends over some 5,700 sq miles, roughly the size of Northern Ireland or Connecticut, supporting over 4 million animals and birds. The park has short grass plains, kopje outcrops, acacia savannah and wooded grasslands. It is in this region that the Great Migration begins to congregate in the rutting season for its push to the birthing plains in the south. This mass exodus of one and a half million wildebeest and half a million zebra and gazelle searching for water and pasture is one of the greatest natural spectacles on earth. The great migration pattern follows a 500 mile circuit from Kenya's Masai Mara to the Serengeti reaching its climax in December to February when the birthing begins in the Southern Serengeti. These shifting herds with their old, crippled and young form an easy target for the numerous predators that inhabit the plains and rivers such as lions, hyena, jackal, wilddog, leopard, cheetah and crocodiles. The Serengeti rarely disappoints, and few people leave without having their expectations surpassed by the beauty, the wildlife and the sheer scale of the migration.

Days 7-8
Return to the airstrip for your flight back to Manyara and onward road transfer to the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge for two nights. Situated on the rim of the crater, with outstanding  views of the crater, which is a World Heritage Site, five hundred metres below.  Accommodation is in luxurious private cottages which  combined with fine cuisine and personalised butler service have earned the lodge membership in ‘Small Luxury Hotels of the World’. Guided game drives on the crater floor and sunset walks around the lodge. Terms: Fully Inclusive.

Ngorongoro Crater National Park
The Ngorongoro Crater was formed some 8 million years ago when the cone of an active volcano collapsed forming a 2000ft deep 12sq mile crater known as a caldera. The volcanic nature of the soils and plentiful water supply within the caldera quickly transformed the area in to a spectacular sanctuary for many wild species and birds that still inhabit the crater today. These include lion, elephant, black and white rhino, buffalo, leopard and hyena together with attendant plains game and antelope. There are numerous different habitats within the crater ranging from yellow barked acacia forests, swamps, springs, soda lakes and open grassland each supporting a distinct ecosystem. Away from the crater In the plains that separate it from the Serengeti lies the shifting sands and the Olduvai Gorge, popularly known as the cradle of mankind. It was here that Dr Louis Leakey and his wife Mary discovered the remains of Zionanthropus Bosei, a distant ancestor of man. You will also see fossilized footprints, remains of ancient tools and bones from various prehistoric species that are now extinct in the small  museum.

Day 9
