| Sirikoi is a spectacular game lodge and tented camp situated on private land surrounded by the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, on the northern slopes of Mount Kenya. Set in a shady acacia grove and overlooking a natural waterhole fed from a mountain springs, Sirikoi offers some of the best game viewing in East Africa. Evening sundowners with mesmerising views of distant mountain ranges, delicious meals served under the stars next to a roaring fire and the sounds of animals in camp late at night are just a small part of this magical experience. A wide range of activities are offered, including helicopter and bi-plane trips, horseback riding safaris, bush walks and picnics, and visits to a local Maasai community. Sirikoi was designed and built by the owner Willie who has run tailor-made safaris throughout East Africa for over thirty years. In creating Sirikoi, his aim was to provide clients with a private and unique camp that combines luxurious comfort and unmatched wildlife viewing. Sirikoi consists of the main buildings with dining and sitting rooms (above) has four luxury tents, each built on a platform with a private veranda overlooking the waterhole, a living area with a fireplace and an elegant bathroom with a Victorian bath and a shower. There are two further traditional tents with en-suite showers. The Lodge also has two large Safari Villas situated in a private corner of the camp. One is two bedroomed and the other three bedroomed each being constructed from wood, thatch and stone with a large deck areas overlooking wetlands where elephant and buffalo are regular visitors. Each house has its own kitchen, dining room and living space so that you can be totally independent of the lodge if you so wish. | Lewa Wildlife Conservancy has a huge variety of wildlife with over 70 different species of mammal. There are roughly equal numbers of black and white rhino – at the latest count there were 65 black and 46 white. The world's largest concentration of the endangered Grevy zebra resides on Lewa as well as elephant, buffalo, greater kudu, oryx, lion, leopard and cheetah amongst many other mammal species. Fantastic views of distant mountain ranges and a beautiful backdrop of snow-capped Mount Kenya provide a perfect setting for 4x4 game drives and guided bush walks.The Conservancy is teeming with birdlife with over 350 species across the diverse topography which includes rolling open plains, hills and kopjes, thick forest, valleys, escarpments, wetlands and rivers. Fly Camps A few nights in Sirikoi's specially developed mobile camp which can be set up at remote locations throughout Kenya, from the dry bush country of Samburu to the forests of the Matthews Range to the shores of Lake Turkana. You can experience the beauty, solitude and fascinating tribal cultures of these rarely visited destinations. or you can follow the migrations or the transitory elephants as they travel vast distances in large numbers.
Fishing There are some fantastic trout fishing opportunities on Lake Alice and Lake Michelson, both within the neighbouring Mount Kenya National Park. Helicopter trips After just a 15-minute helicopter flight from Sirikoi you can be circling the peaks of Mount Kenya, the second highest point in Africa. Here you can also fish the well stocked lakes at 11000ft, walk the giant heather hillsides or explore the Cedar and Podo forests surrounding the summit. Rustic accommodation is available at Rotundu Cabins (where Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton). These attractive and cosy cedar log cabins are insulated from the elements by a lining of moss and heated with open wood fires. The cabins are maintained by happy retainers who light the lanterns to illuminate these simple but comfortable lodges whilst also acting as gillies and guides. The main lodge has a basic kitchen, an open plan comfortable lounge/dining room, a bunk bedroom and adjacent bathroom. There is a second ‘honeymoon’ cabin that sleeps two. Both the lodges have their own bathroom with bathtubs, the water being heated by wood burning boilers. Usually self catered,the cabins can also be provisioned with hampers from Sirikoi or Borana. You can also ride to Rotundu from Kisima Farm which can be reached in a day from Lewa. Its all very remote and highly recommended.
Visit to a Maasai community Learn first-hand about local customs, culture and the daily lives of the Maasai with a visit to the Il Ngwesi community, located approximately 1 hours drive from Sirikoi. Bush walks, picnics and dinners Set out in the early morning from the camp for a walk into the wilderness with a skilled guide, experiencing the sights and sound of the bush: the tracks of lion, hyena and rhino; the high pitched alarm call of the guinea fowl; the rich smell of the African earth. End your adventure with a picnic breakfast in the shade of a spreading acacia tree. Bi-plane excursions Fly over Lewa in a brand new Waco biplane. Based on the original model of the 1920's and 30's, the plane has room for two passengers to sit side by side for a nostalgic, once-in-a-lifetime flying experience. Horseback riding Riding on horseback through the bush, accompanied by an experienced guide, will give you an unparallelled opportunity to get close to wildlife as many game species allow horses to approach very closely without feeling threatened. Combined with the stunning scenery and varied terrain, this is a riding experience not to be missed. You will be matched with a horse based on your level of confidence suitable for both amateur and experienced riders. Camel safaris (Booked in addition to a stay at Sirikoi and highly recommended) This is a walking safari, with camels to carry the camp and supplies, led by Samburu tribesmen whose knowledge of the terrain has been passed through generations. A three to four hour walk in the morning with a stop for a bush breakfast is followed by a long rest during the heat of the day at your newly erected campsite. You will finish off the day with an evening bushwalk and a hot shower under the stars before falling asleep listening to the sounds of the African bush. Lion tracking A few of the lions on Lewa are monitored so that important research information such as social structure, territory and feeding ecology can be evaluated.
