Shompole, Shompole House, Little Shompole and 360, Lake Natron, Kenya

The Best

Shompole is a unique lodge whose style and ambience is hitherto unseen in East Africa. Designed by Anthony Russell, the result is an artistically appointed lodge built using natural materials, smooth white walls  and water to create a fresh and unusual approach to the bush experience. The design of each building incorporates the beauty of natural forms whilst blending effortlessly into the rugged surroundings. Situated on the side of the Nguruman escarpment, overlooking the stunning expanse of the Great Rift Valley, the lodge is positioned ideally to make the most of both the incredible panorama and the cool breeze.

Shompole Lodge, Kenya

The variety of landscape available at Shompole allows for a great range of activities from early morning and evening walks, day and night game drives, bush breakfasts and sundowner excursions to the enchanting fig forest. The experience and skills of Maasai guides and trackers play an important part in the experience on offer here. The area is home to a great deal of bird and animal life including lion, leopard, cheetah, aardworlf, civet, bat-eared fox, serval, regular sightings of wild dog, striped and spotted hyena, eland, zebra, oryx and giraffe, amongst others. In addition, guests can take the opportunity of mixing with, and finding out more about, the Maasai people by visiting the local market and villages, and taking part in festivities and celebrations that might be taking place. Activities are unscheduled and organised according to the preference of guests.

ACCOMMODATION

The lodge is constructed using naturally occurring white quartz stone, pale thatch and fig wood, and using water as a prime feature. Each tented room provides a very spacious shady oasis in this arid environment. With privacy, comfort and relaxation in mind, each room has its own cool-pool and informal sitting areas, a bathroom with a view and a specially designed tent that includes vast windows and a high canopied roof. Shompole consists of six rooms in the main lodge; Shompole House is an exclusive use two bedroom unit, whilst Little Shompole is further up the hill and is an entirely exclusive and stand alone house with two enormous individual bedrooms. Both Little Shompole and Shompole House are ideal for families or groups of friends travelling together. 360 is the ultimate private safari house whose design surpasses even that of the award winning Shompole. The phenomenal outside open living space has 360 degree views across the Great Rift Valley, the luxurious swimming pool flows beneath the dining/living area enticing guests to jump off into it! Complete with helipad and own staff, 360 is the perfect destination for travellers seeking total privacy and unrivalled style.
