Check Hotel/Lodge Availability Shiwa House, Shiwa N’gandu, Zambia | Recommended |
Shiwa House is situated in the heart of Northern Zambia and built in 1928 by Sir Stewart Gore-Browne. The house overlooks the famous Shiwa N’gandu ‘Lake of the Royal Crocodiles’. The house has recently been restored by Charlie (Sir Stewart Gore-Browne’s eldest grandson) and his wife Jo. They are trying to regenerate the farm and house and bring it back to how it was, a hugely expensive and lengthy operation. The house is steeped in history and the library remains the manor’s heart. Guests have access to archival material and one of the largest private collections in Zambia. Dr Kenneth Kaunda wrote his book here and befriended Sir Stewart Gore Brown. Indeed, when Sir Stewart died he was the only white African ever to be honoured with a State Funeral. The Estate is 10,000 hectares and has been newly fenced. It now carries cattle and sheep as well as selected game. Tours of the Estate are part of staying here and visits to the brick works, kilns, hospital, cottages, vegetable gardens, lake, old steam engines and the grave of Sir Stewart are included. Visiting Shiwa is the most extra ordinary experience. It is almost unbelievable to think that the whole estate was set up in the 1920’s. | Style | Old Colonial | | Air/Con | No | | Dining | Yes | | Children | Yes | | No. of Bedrooms | 5 | | Activities | Tours of the estate.
