SHINDE SAFARI CAMP, Okavango Delta

Recommended

Nestled on a lush palm island in the heart of the northern Okavango Delta, Shinde is surrounded by open floodplains, clear waterways and palm fringed islands teeming with bird life and game.  Its remoteness has ensured that the wildlife has not been subject to the pressures of mass tourism.  The island is especially favoured by members of the antelope family, including the elusive sitatunga whose elongated and splayed hooves enable it to walk on the unstable beds of reeds floating on the water.  As it is situated within a private concession with permanent water, Shinde offers a full complement of game activities year round.

Accommodation consists of eight traditional deluxe tents with ensuite bathrooms, each with different views looking out from the island. The dining/lounge area is raised on a spectacular multi tiered deck under canvas built harmoniously around large Mangosteen and Jackleberry shade trees, with beautiful vistas overlooking the flowing Okavango waters. Game activities included are game drives, night drives, excursions by motorboat, and mokoro (dug-out canoe) excursions in the shallower waters where you can stop to explore the tree islands on guided walks. Fishing is another activity on offer but usually it is recommended in the warmer months.

For extra privacy there is a section of the camp for exclusive use - The Enclave.  Here, there are three new tents, elevated on teak platforms overlooking a vast papyrus and reed expanse.  The Enclave includes a private boma and a private bar / dining area / lounge overlooking the lagoon and a waiter/barman specifically assigned to this facility.  A senior guide hosts guests and will escort them on private game activities: morning, afternoon and evening game drives, game walks, mokoros, motor boats and excellent fishing. The minimum reservation is for three nights.
