Sher Garh Tented Camp, Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India

Recommended

Sher Garh Camp is located just inside the southern boundary of the Kanha Tiger Reserve in the south of Madhya Pradesh.  This National Park, one of the largest in India, was created in 1972 as part of a project to save the Indian Tiger and its habitat.  The park extends to some 1945 sq.kms. of undulating country and consists of a buffer zone surrounding an inner core area of 940 sq.kms. of sal and bamboo forests, meandering river valleys, vast meadows and high plateaus.  Today, the park is home to 22 species of mammal, including over 100 tigers, the rarely sighted nocturnal sloth bear and the once almost extinct hard-ground-adapted swamp deer or barasingha, now found only at Kanha.  In addition, the reserve has recorded sightings of over 220 bird species.  This is one of India's most picturesque tiger reserves and is one of the finest locations in which to view the highly endangered Royal Bengal tiger.

The Camp is new and is set amongst woodland that surrounds a large waterhole at the centre of its grounds.  Accommodation consists of 6 cosy tents, strategically placed to ensure privacy, each with its own large front verandah and attached bathroom with piping hot showers.  Public facilities at the Main House, which is surrounded by deep verandahs and looks out over the waterhole, include a lounge, a small library and a dining room serving wholesome Indian and Continental food prepared from home-grown vegetables, local produce and fish farmed from the lodge lake.

Game viewing is principally by 4x4.  The location of the camp in the more remote region of Mukki allows drives along less beaten tracks, away from the crowds and with a sense of being completely alone in the jungle.  Inside the forest, tiger tracking from elephant back is also possible.  Bird walks, cycle rides, river swimming, elephant bathing, picnics and trips to a local tribal market can also be arranged.
