A lovely, boutique hotel in elevated tropical surroundings situated in Kerela's Southern Ghats about 4/5 hours drive from Cochin. Shalimar Spice Garden is a perfect blend of European and Indian living without diluting the rich heritage of Kerala. The accommodation is nicely presented with a style more towards simple luxury than 5*. Nestling in a valley in the Southern Ghats (Hills) this rustic retreat is both an ideal base from which to explore the areas national parks and a very peaceful spot to from which to enjoy the tropical surroundings, delicious food and Ayurvedic treatments. All the rooms are in traditional thatched Malayali houses scattered in the tropical gardens and decorated in pleasant neutral colours with the occasion splash of rich Indian colour. Each room is air- conditioned and has a good sized and well equipped en-suite bathroom. The hotel is reached by foot bridge over a gentle mountain stream that meanders through the property. The indigenous jungle foliage and the coffee, cardamom and other plants that surround the cottages create a wonderful feeling of complete privacy, peace and tranquility. Some cottages are decorated with intricately carved Kerelan wooden panels and beds in keeping with local traditions and styles. The hotel has a very good restaurant serving delicious food of both Kerelan and Italian origins, much of which is produced locally. The variety of vegetables and exotic fruit is notable. At 2200 ft the evenings can be cooler and there is a small library with a fireplace where one can curl up with a good book.
