Seven Spirit Bay - Cobourg Peninsula, Northern Territory

Highly Recommended

Eco friendly accommodation in a remote & wild coastal location.  Perched on the very northern tip of the Northern Territory, the Cobourg Peninsula looks out across the glassy tropical waters of the Arafura Sea, lying closer to the islands of Indonesia than any of Australia’s major cities. This coast encountered foreign influence long before Europeans reached Australia’s eastern shores when the Macassans harvested trepang in the coastal waters and camped on the coastal fringes for part of each year. The wildlife also reflects Asia’s proximity, with buffalo, banteng, Timorese ponies and wild pigs some of the animals you might see at Seven Spirit Bay in addition to the native species.

The marine life at Seven Spirit Bay is one of Australia’s best kept secrets – the inviting blue-green waters can be deceptive. Salt-water crocodiles, tiger sharks and, in the summer months, box jelly fish, make it safer to swim in the lodge pool. However, spotting huge manta rays or dolphins, searching for mudcrabs, watching the small reef sharks hunting over the mud flats, or trawling for queenfish, provide an endless variety of interest and activity in the bays and tidal creeks off Australia’s remote northern coast.

The peninsula also harboured the first European settlement on the north coast, the Victoria settlement, whose crumbled remains bear witness to the difficulties the first settlers encountered when establishing a foothold in northern Australia in the 1820s.

FACILITIES

StyleEco Wilderness Lodge
Accommodation

23 individual ‘Habitats’ have been built amongst the savannah woodlands a short distance back from the waters of the bay. These large hexagonal rooms have been designed to expose guests to the surrounding bush and the louvred shutters allow shade in the heat of day as well views through the trees to the water beyond.  Six Premium Bay View ‘Habitats’ overlook Coral Bay and have a private outdoor balcony to relax outside on while 17 Tropical ‘Habitats’ of the same design and size look out into the surrounding bush with glimpses of the waters of the bay beyond. A few steps behind each room is a private semi-open luxurious bathroom. All rooms have 2 queen size beds, ceiling fans, fridge/minibar and tea/coffee making facilities.

DiningThe restaurant in the main lodge building seats 46 guests and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, which are served both in and outdoors and there is an extensive wine list to chose from. Private dinners can be arranged on the low lying cliffs overlooking the bay. With views over the swimming pool and the Arafura Sea beyond, the lodge building has the space to sit back and relax during the heat of the day or with a rich red Top End sunset at the end of the day.
Children

Children are welcome at Seven Spirit Bay though the resort is not ideal for children less than 6 years.

Activities / Facilities

Different packages offer different inclusions - generally only nature walks and bird watching are included in the lead in packages : -
Bird watching - The woodlands, beaches, offshore reef islands and coastal mudflats all provide a varying habitat for keen birdwatchers and a day trip to Arnhem Land adds another dimension with the wetlands and stone country.
Fishing - The waters off the Cobourg Peninsula provide some of the best fishing in the Top End of Australia. The surrounding seas provide a marine extravaganza for fisherman and keen naturalist alike. With bait balls up to a kilometre in diameter feeding on the wealth of coral spawn that is generated on the reefs, the tuna, queenfish and trevally come to feed in large numbers, and the fishing to go with this is extraordinary. The coastal creeks also provide fabulous opportunities to catch barramundi, with April and May being the best months, when the ‘barra’ are coming back downstream after spawning.
Heritage trips to Victoria Settlement - a short walk from the lodge takes in the ruins of the hospital for the Victoria Settlement, while a longer day trip enables a visit to the original settlement and the tales that surrounded this remote and ultimately hopeless outpost on Australia’s north coast.
Guided nature walks - the beaches and immediate savannah woodland provide an array of walking opportunities, which are made all the more interesting with a local guide on hand to interprete the environment and spot some of its bird and mammal species.
Coastal marine trips - even if you are not a fisherman, the coastal waters provide an outstanding marine safari, with a variety of turtles, prolific birdlife, sharks, dugong, crocodiles and occasionally whales, all possible sightings.
Arnhem Land - a stop en route from Darwin to Seven Spirit Way, provides the chance to see some of the most outstanding rock art in Australia and gain a glimpse into the country’s ancient indigenous past.
