Selous Private Camp,  now called North Camp at Selous Safari Camp, Tanzania

Highly recommended

Embracing 54,000 square kilometres of south-eastern Tanzania, the Selous Game Reserve is a World Heritage Site and is the largest protected wilderness reserve on the continent, three times larger than the Serengeti and twice the size of Belgium.

The sheer diversity of the landscape - from hot volcanic springs, placid lagoons and the many channels from the Great Ruaha and Rufiji Rivers which bisect the reserve - makes the Selous a unique area in which to observe the full panoply of African wildlife. Most of Africa’s mammal species, from the largest to the smallest to the rarest, thrive here. In addition there are some 440 species of birds and more than 2,000 recorded varieties of plants.

Consisting of just six large tented suites, North Camp is the one of smallest Luxury Safari Camps in Tanzania, dedicated to providing an unparalleled level of service, hospitality and luxury.  With its own swimming pool, dining area, vehicles, boats, guides, managers and gourmet bush cuisine, the camp offers the very best in time-honoured safari style.  The huge luxury tents are raised on wooden platforms and have palm canopies and verandahs to front and rear to maximize views and catch the breeze.  They are fully ensuite with an adjoining shower area open to the stars.  Please note that from June 2008, the camp is available only on an exclusive basis.

The river & lake systems around the camp attract a huge diversity of animals including lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, hippo and crocodile. The area is also home to one of the few remaining wild dog populations in the world.  Activities include game drives, river safaris in boats with outboard motors, walking safaris, fishing, and mobile bush camping (fly camping) in pristine surroundings (pre-booking essential).
