Selous Wilderness Camp is set along the palm-fringed edges of the wide, meandering Rufiji River, which is one of the largest water systems in East Africa. With its associated wetlands, lakes and swamps, it is one of the most outstanding ecological systems in the whole of Eastern Africa and has been designated as a World Heritage site. Access is via Mtemere airstrip about a 1 hour flight from Dar es Salaam. Thense you will be transferred to the lodge by boat and 4x4. With only 7 spacious tents Selous Wilderness Camp offers is intimate and freindly location to stay on safari. The tents are well spaced out and provide comfortable en suite accomodation. Each tent has a good fan for hot nights. A couple of the tents are equipt to take an additional child and there is a honeymoon tent with an outside bath. The centrall thatched messing area looks is pleasantly furnished with leather sofas and occasional furniture and looks out over the river. This provides an excellent spot to spot game namely hippos, crocs and specatcular birdlife along the river. The camp has a small swimming pool for cooling off. The hotest months being January, February and March. Although the Selous is best known for its spectacular mammals - especially elephants bathing and criss-crossing the Rufiji River - it is equally celebrated for its abundant and varied bird life. Another Selous “speciality” are the many hippos and crocodiles. The most conspicuous bird life is around the constantly changing pattern of the sandbanks, oxbow lakes, lagoons and channels along the Rufiji River, where the Selous Wilderness Camp is located. The camp is situated outside the Park which is close by but entails about a 25 minute boat and 4x4 journey to the park gate. The river scenery around the new camp is made all the more spectacular by dense riparian forests dotted with groves of borassus palms with their majestically swaying fronds. The Selous is probably Africa’s least known and wildest protected area, rich in game and varied habitat. Selous Wilderness Camp offers river safaris, game drives and walking safaris with the occasional surprise bush picnic. The Selous Covering approximately 50,000 square kilometres, the Selous is one of the largest protected areas in the world and also Africa’s oldest protected area. With its diverse habitat, the northern photographic tourism sector is one of the most beautiful and game-rich areas of this whole ecosytem. Three-quarters of the Selous consists of woodland of various types, short grassy plains and seasonally flooded pans. Over half of Tanzania’s elephants, approx. 60,000, live in the Selous ecosystem where they roam the miombo forests, savannahs and thickets with over 150,000 buffalo, 40,000 hippos, 1,500 wild dogs, 3,000 to 4,000 lions as well as several hundred thousand plains game.
