Situated on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River, in the centre of the Samburu National Reserve in Kenya's rugged, semi-arid Northern Province, Samburu Serena Lodge echoes the robust rhythms of African riverfront life. Mount Kenya itself looms on the horizon. The landscape is home to a variety of rare game, and is also inhabited by hundreds of different bird species. WILDLIFE The Samburu Game Reserve is an austere semi-desert of thornbush flats, dry grassland and open acacia woodland which is home to several rare species of birds and animals (including the exotic reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, Grevy's zebra, blue-flushed Somali ostrich and bristle-crowned starling) as well as the more common African animals like lesser kudus, elephants, lions, cheetahs and leopards. The nearby Uaso Nyiro River is home to many Nile crocodiles (which can reach up to twelve feet long) and hippo.
