Rocktail Bay Lodge is situated in northern Natal, within the beautiful Maputaland Coastal Forest Reserve and adjoining the Maputaland Marine Reserve. The secluded lodge is situated close to the Indian Ocean in the forest, just behind the first row of dunes. It offers perhaps the most private beach experience in South Africa on 40 kilometres of stunning, unspoilt, undeveloped, empty and pristine coastline. (See also Rocktail Beach Camp)
Accommodation is in ten wood and thatch "treehouse" chalets, raised up on stilts into the dune forest canopy. There is also a family suite. All the tree houses are comfortably furnished and have full ensuite facilities, including inside and outside showers. To keep the beach as unspoilt as possible, the chalets are hidden behind the wooded dunes and do not have sea views. A boardwalk leads from the lodge over the dunes to the beach.
The landscape is rolling and picturesque but, although there are many smaller mammals, this is not a prime game viewing area. It is situated within a marine and coastal forest reserve and is an ideal location for gentle relaxation combined with walking, snorkelling and amazing diving.
There are hippos, and in summer, egg-laying turtles come ashore at low tide at night. There is an extensive turtle tracking programme. Whales and dolphins can be seen offshore. The bird life is prolific and there are hides dotted around the property.
