| >
This boutique heritage hotel is one of our favourites in the area. Situated across a quiet road from Alleppey Beach (great for sunsets and kite flying) and beautifully run, the hotel is a seriously nice place to stay and relax. Stays of up to seven nights in our opinion would be ideal. In one of the hotels courtyards there is a good swimming pool surrounded by comfortable pool loungers shaded by trees and umbrellas. There is an excellent rooftop restaurant serving authentic Keralan fresh food with an imaginative lighter lunch which can also be served by the pool. The restaurant is open on 3 sides to catch the sea breeze and has views to the sea and inland over the village "parade ground" (watch the local youth learning to drive in the mornings and the boys playing cricket in the afternoon) and to the coastal railway beyond (not overly noisy or frequent). Most importantly, the residency is run by its owner Bibi Baskin who has a terrific eye for detail and is a charming host. All rooms are air-conditioned (but you can sleep with your windows open and a ceiling fan on if you prefer). In the main house there are six spacious high-ceilinged bedrooms with traditional Kerala furniture such as Raheem's father's four-poster bed bought as a wedding gift in 1930. Bathrooms are ensuite and include one which is open to the skies The large hall has a high teakwood ceiling and many of the windows have attractive glass shutters inside, wooden shutters outside and fan lights with the original stained glass. The furniture is rich and traditional. Purified drinking water and ice are provided in all the rooms. The biggest room in the property, the Begums’ Nook is as its name suggests – in a separate courtyard around the corner from the pool. Further accomodation is provided in a traditional marriage hall that has been refurbished recently to privide 3 additional ensuite deluxe rooms.
