The Oyster Bay Hotel, Dar es Salaam

Highly recommended

The Oyster Bay is located in the centre of the Oyster Bay area of Dar es Salaam, facing the ocean. It is a fifteen minute drive from the centre of the city and thirty minutes from the airports (domestic and international), depending on the traffic.  The hotel is purely designed for travellers who are passing through Dar es Salaam, whether for a few hours or a night or two.

Accommodation consists of eight spacious ocean facing suites with balconies, situated on three floors. There is no lift but the view from the upper levels is certainly worth the exertion of getting there - and of course the ocean breezes are stronger the higher you go. All suites are air conditioned, but also have louvred shutters and cross ventilation for those who do not wish to sleep in air-conditioning. The suites are furnished with either king sized or twin beds and have lounge furnishing as well as writing desks, television, dvd player and computer connections. The ensuite bathrooms are open plan and contain a free-standing bath, walk through shower and enclosed loo.

Furnished in the style of a private house with modern contemporary African décor, the lounges and dining areas flow out onto a covered verandah and to a gazebo with space beyond to lawns and beyond to contemporary designed garden. There is a study with internet access. All areas are air conditioned for the hotter more humid months, but also have lots of French doors to allow for cooling by 'tropical breeze'.  Meals are served on the verandah, in the dining area and on the pool deck, depending on time of day and weather conditions.  There is a fifteen-metre lap pool in the garden, and a combination of pool decks and sun bathing and shady areas.

The resident 'family' of managers and staff are there to make sure that each guest enjoys the Oyster Bay experience to the full. It is designed to be a 'home' in the city rather than a hotel and to replicate the feeling of staying with 'friends'. This is in our view such a pleasant place to stay that two nights is better than one, if you have the time.
