When the overland telegraph line was built in 1884, revolutionizing communications between London and her far-flung dominion, Bill Hayes’ great grandfather was with the team. With their station encompassing half a million acres of cattle country in central Australia, the 6 th generation of the Hayes family now lives at Ooraminna. Watching the sun’s rays break across the red of the sandstone outcrops and the vast acreage beyond leaves an impression of awe at the distances involved in this part of Australia. Join one of the Hayes family during a day on the property or even watch them drive the cattle by helicopter from the most remote corners of the station. At the end of the day, join Bill and some of the station hands for a beer at the homestead and an insight into the life he and his family have experienced in building this part of Australia’s wilderness into a place that is uniquely their own. In the quiet of evening it is a simple delight to just enjoy the clear stillness of the night and a canopy of stars stretching from one horizon to the other.
