Okapuka Horse Safaris have created an unforgettable riding experience for you. Savour an unspoiled corner of Africa trekking along trails that have been carefully selected to give you breathtaking views of landscape and wildlife. It is a truly exhilarating experience to ride freely through the African bush on the lookout for game. Imagine riding amongst herds of giraffe or wildebeest, or watching rhino - from a safe distance! Okapuka is situated near the Otjihavera river in Namibia, only 75 minutes drive from Windhoek, on the South West coast of Africa. Okapuka Horse Safaris are affiliated to the Okapuka Ranch which covers 16,000 hectares of richly varied landscape and is one of the best stocked private game reserves in Namibia.
Okapuka Horse Safaris is also suitable for non-riding visitors. RIDING For riding enthusiasts in particular the country is irresistible. Okapuka Horse Safaris has riding rights throughout the surrounding valleys and mountains, offering limitless trails, covering an area larger than 35,000 hectares. You can ride more or less anywhere with few restrictions. Most of the trails follow natural paths created over hundreds of years by the local wildlife. The facilities, horses and equipment are of the highest quality. To guarantee a personal experience groups are restricted to a maximum of 6 riders led by an experienced guide. You should be physically fit and an experienced rider capable of handling all gaits. While much of the trail riding is done at a walk or trot, it is essential that you can cope with higher speeds. Some of the trails are in the mountains and can be narrow and steep. WILDLIFE Namibia's abundant wildlife is possibly its greatest tourist asset. Large game species found include elephant, rhino, giraffe and buffalo as well as lion, leopard and cheetah. There are eight endemic mammal species - the black-faced impala and several mice, gerbils and bats - while the Namib Desert is well known for its large number of endemic dune-dwellers (especially lizards). Endangered mammals include the wild dog, black rhino, lion, cheetah, puku, oribi and waterbuck. There are over 20 species of antelope ranging from the eland (the largest) to the Damara dik-dik (the smallest). The gemsbok, a striking antelope with long symmetrical horns and distinctive black and white markings, is featured on the Namibian coat of arms.
About 500 bird species breed locally (including Herero chat, Rockrunner, Monteiro's hornbill and Damara tern), while others are migrants. The most typical image of Namibia's plant life is characterized by African savannah dotted by solitary acacias and stretches of silvery grass appearing on desert plains after the rains. Over 120 species of trees grow in Namibia, ranging from the umbrella shaped camel thorn which produces clusters of yellow mimosa-like flowers and occurs virtually throughout the country, to the valuable ana tree with its white flowers and nutritious pods.
