Ngorongoro Crater, 12 miles wide, is the world's largest intact caldera (steep-sided cavity), created by the cataclysmic collapse of this volcanic mountain 2 million years ago.  Today the volcano and terrain are part of vast conservation lands inhabited by Masai tribes and a wide variety of big game and birdlife.  Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is built into the rim of the caldera, the plant and ivy-covered native stone blending masterfully with its surroundings.   Ngorongoro Serena is 180 kilometres from Arusha - a 4 hour drive or a 40 minute flight from Arusha Airport to the Ngorongoro airstrip.   WILDLIFE  The floor of Ngorongoro Crater is mainly grassland, with patches of spring-fed marshes, freshwater ponds, a salt lake and small forests.  It is home to 20,000 large animals: buffaloes, wildebeests, zebras and gazelles graze the grassland; elephants roam the wooded areas; hippos gather in marshes and ponds.  Lions, spotted hyenas and jackals are easy to find, as are ostriches, crowned cranes, and kori bustards.
