Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, Tanzania

Highly Recommended

Ngorongoro Crater, 12 miles wide, is the world's largest intact caldera (steep-sided cavity), created by the cataclysmic collapse of this volcanic mountain 2 million years ago.  Today the volcano and terrain are part of vast conservation lands inhabited by Masai tribes and a wide variety of big game and birdlife.  Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is built into the rim of the caldera, the plant and ivy-covered native stone blending masterfully with its surroundings.   Ngorongoro Serena is 180 kilometres from Arusha - a 4 hour drive or a 40 minute flight from Arusha Airport to the Ngorongoro airstrip.

WILDLIFE
The floor of Ngorongoro Crater is mainly grassland, with patches of spring-fed marshes, freshwater ponds, a salt lake and small forests.  It is home to 20,000 large animals: buffaloes, wildebeests, zebras and gazelles graze the grassland; elephants roam the wooded areas; hippos gather in marshes and ponds.  Lions, spotted hyenas and jackals are easy to find, as are ostriches, crowned cranes, and kori bustards.

FACILITIES
The lounge and dining room are indoors (the climate is cool), overlooking the Crater.  The restaurant and bar have magnificent examples of prehistoric cave paintings found in the nearby Olduvai Gorge.  Log fires greatly enhance the atmosphere, especially in the evenings.  The lounge has a balcony with a fixed telescope for guests' use.  The Lodge has a boutique.
