Three million years ago, Ngorongoro, one of the highest peaks in Africa, towered alongside Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. Then the volcano collapsed, forming the world's largest intact 'caldera' (steep-sided cavity). Today, Ngorongoro remains a place of drama and beauty - the most remarkable wildlife haven on the planet and a photographer's dream. High on the south-western rim, resembling a Maasai village and with commanding views of this natural wonder, stands Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. The lodge consists of three adjacent camps comprising 30 stone and thatch suites, perched on stilts on the crater rim.
