Namib Dunes, Namibia, Time for AfricaRhino, Namibia, Time for AfricaCaracal, Namibia, Time for Africa

Namibia is an awe inspiring land stretching 1000 miles from the Orange River in the south to Ovamboland bordering Angola in the north. Between lies the Namib Desert and a semi-arid wilderness found nowhere else in Southern Africa. The largest sand dunes in the world are found at Sossusvlei and throughout the region there are fascinating desert adaptations of both flora and fauna. It is a truly different experience.

The NamibRand Nature reserve adjoining the Namib Naukluft National Park is one of the best places to experience the varied desert landscape. Here, at Wolwedanes Dune Lodge, you can drive or balloon over the landscape and visit the unique Sussusvlei Dune Park.

Flying north along the barren Skeleton Coast over seal sanctuaries and shipwrecks to Damaraland is spectacular. This northern area presents endless vistas across stark plains, ancient valleys and hills that harbour leopard, black rhino, lion, elephant, onyx and springbok. In the far north lies the Etosha National Park where in the adjoining reserves, night drives and bush walks are available. Accommodation is in both luxury tented camps and in lodges such as Ongava Lodge.

In the east lies the Caprivi Strip reaching to the borders of Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The little known Mdumo National Park and the adjacent Linyanti swamps provide a wonderful contrast to the barren deserts of the West Coast and interior. Lianshulu Lodge, lying on the Kwando River, is a haven for bird life where you can experience unforgettable waterborne safaris, game drives and walks.

As in South Africa, self-drive is possible though the distances are vast and with the exception of the main routes all roads are gravel and dirt. However, unless you have plenty of time on your hands, the best way to see this country is to fly in light aircraft.
