| Mowani Mountain Camp, Damaraland, Namibia | Recommended |
In southern Damaraland, between the Ugab and Huab Rivers, lies a vast and unspoilt wilderness area with magnificent desert scenery, unusual geological formations and a unique variety of desert fauna and flora. On a boulder-strewn high spot with commanding views over this ancient and rugged landscape is Mowani Mountain Camp.
The camp, which has been carefully designed to blend into the rocky site, consists of 12 luxury tents on elevated decks, all with en-suite facilities, decorated beautifully in East African style. Guests will be pampered by crisp white linen, en-suite bathrooms with shower, washbasin and loo, and a private wooden verandah offering an open view of the wonderful Damara landscape. Guests can also relax at the Mowani pool deck, lodged between the boulders, and a great place to soak up the sun whilst enjoying a refreshing drink and admiring breathtaking views. In addition to the tented rooms is a suite: the ultimate retreat, built high on a rocky outcrop with spectacular views from every room! This luxury thatched suite comes complete with butler service and is tastefully furbished with a distinct African flavour. The private lounge is equipped with a music centre and satellite television, complimented by private dining and bar facilities. Whether relaxing in the folds of a crisp white bed, enjoying a romantic dinner under the stars or throwing caution to the wind in the open-air bush bathroom, guests will be delighted by this unique bush experience. Adventures and activities available at Mowani include guided nature drives and hiking through magnificent scenery in search of indigenous game, which includes the rare black rhino and the elusive desert elephant. Hot air ballooning and scenic microlight flights can also be arranged. The highlight of any stay is a visit to Twyfelfontein: a wonderful archealogical site offering more than 2,500 Bushmen engravings and paintings, probably the finest example of rock engravings in Southern Africa. | Style | Tented camp | | Air/Con | No | | Dining | Yes | | Children | Yes | | No. of Bedrooms | 12 ensuite tented rooms (8 standard, 4 view), one luxury room, and one lodge suite | | Pool | Yes | | Activities | Guided nature drives, hiking, cultural and archaeological excursions, hot air ballooning, microlight flights | | Price Range | From about £180 per person sharing in a standard tented room, fully inclusive. |
