Moorilla Estate offers Hobart’s only five star lodging in chalet style units suspended from steel frames high above the coastline. The Estate also houses a museum of antiquities with African, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian, pre-Columbian and Roman artefacts. Founded as a winery in the 1950s, Moorilla has evolved into a cultural haven that draws visitors from around the world to enjoy award-winning wine, food, accommodation and the Moorilla Museum of Antiquities. Moorilla Estate is the birthplace of Tasmania's modern wine industry - although earlier pioneers had attempted to grow grapes and make wine, it was Italian business immigrant Claudio Alcorso who managed to combine viticulture and marketing in 1955. Alcorso was a patron of the arts and brought his sense of style and aesthetics to life at Moorilla. When the estate fell on hard times in the 1990s, new owners stepped in to revive the site to former glories in keeping with the Alcorso legacy.
