Privacy and comfort enfold you at Mbweni, former haven of freed slaves; and Zanzibar Stone Town awaits you round the corner. Mbweni Ruins Hotel and Garden is renowned for its tranquil environment, and over the years has striven to provide a personal and discreet service in one of the most beautiful, natural, and historic sites in Zanzibar - the hotel is built in the spacious grounds of the ruins of the first Anglican Christian missionary settlement in East Africa. THE GARDEN The garden was conceived in 1991, the vision of a far-sighted conservationist, and has since earned a reputation for its plant diversity. It is now established as a flourishing Botanical garden and its exotic and indigenous species attract interesting animals and birdlife.
THE RUINS The Mbweni Ruins are all that remain today of St Mary's School for girls, which was built between 1871 and 1874. The stark and beautiful stonework is a reminder of how the slave trade left families broken and young girls orphaned. The architecture of the school is in typical Swahili fashion, the buildings being set around a central courtyard.
FACILITIES Swimming pool, situated in the grounds just above the beach. The Natural Health Centre offers aromatherapy and shiatsu massage. On the cliff-top overlooking the ocean are the Sundowner Bar and Raintree Restaurant.
A courtesy bus runs five times a day into Zanzibar Stone Town. There are no radios or televisions at Mbweni.
