Built in 1902 and re-opened in late 1998 following its purchase and total refurbishment by Liz McGrath, the Marine has one of the best locations in Africa, perched on the cliff's edge in Hermanus which has become known as one of the best land-based whale-watching areas in the world. (Whales arrive late July and stay through to late November.) The hotel is exquisite - having just received 5-star grading.
Stroll along the cliff hugging path to the golf club and view the miles of white sandy beach beyond. The sparkling courtyard pool might beckon, perfect for catching some African sun. Wile away the remainder of your day in the Orangery and Reading Room, perfect for quiet contemplation, a glass of champagne or planning your onward journey. There are two restaurants, the contemporary and informal Seafood at the Marine, and The Pavilion with stunning sea and courtyard views. All the natural beauty of Walker Bay, with its cliff paths, outstanding coastal and mountain scenery and indigenous flowers is on the doorstep, yet still only 90 minutes from Cape Town. Along with her two sister hotels, The Cellars-Hohenort and The Plettenberg, The Marine is now a member of the prestigious Relaise & Chateaux organization. The properties are within easy striking distance and we can easily create an itinerary combining all three hotels. TRANSFER TIMES 1hr 30 mins from Cape Town.
