Mahua Kothi, Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Highly recommended

Situated in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Bandhavgarh is one of India’s most beautiful national parks and is famous for supporting one of the highest densities of tigers on the Subcontinent.

Tigers - Mahua Kothi

Mahua Kothi is a brand-new joint venture between Taj Hotels and Conservation Corporation Africa to provide an ultimate wildlife experience based on sustainable ecotourism.  The luxurious lodge occupies over 40 acres of grounds and is just 20 minutes from the park entrance. The original homestead (kothi) on the site has been beautifully renovated to provide the guest areas, and each of the twelve charming guest suites has been newly built in the local style.

Private courtyards with shaded seating and traditional mud floors lead to interiors with wooden shutters, hand-finished lime and earth washed walls, roughly hewn wooden beams and handmade pottery roof tiles. Floors are dressed in katni stone strips set in lime mortar.  Ensuite bathrooms feature twin hand basins, indoor shower, bath and separate loo. Richly coloured local textiles, used throughout, are in shades of rust and burnt orange.  The suites have roll-down mats to keep out the early morning sun, as well as overhead fans and air conditioning.

The lodge has a swimming pool, or guests can try yoga or play traditional Indian games. Bicycles are freely available to explore the grounds.  Safaris in 4x4s go into the park twice a day.  The main wildlife viewing takes place in the park's core, where 32 picturesque, wooded hills with open meadows offer good chances of tiger sightings. The park also has excellent birding and a large variety of mammals: leopard, gaur (Indian Bison), chital (spotted deer), Sambar deer, dhole, nilgai, wild boar, chinkara, sloth bear, rhesus macaque, black faced langur, jungle cat, hyena, porcupine, jackal, fox, and wild dog.
