Mahawella

Recommended

If you have been to this paradise island before and have even the vaguest interest in architecture the name Geoffrey Bawa will need no introduction. Although there are many pretenders to his crown he still commands the respect that only the foremost architect of his time can. Mahawella is his last private home. A 2 storey house designed to take full advantage of the breathtaking views over the ocean and the cool breezes that flow off it. The front of the house sits on the lawn that leads down to the massive beach that is enjoyed by only a fortunate few.

Mahawella, Sri Lanka

Great for walking; building the biggest sandcastle ever; playing the world cup; or just lolling around, this beach is what beach holidays are all about. Once back from the beach via the garden shower, sun loungers await you and carry you to far away places where wonderful dreams are stored. Whilst this is a house perfect for adults looking for peace and undisturbed bliss, the size of the house, the garden, the beach, and the pool make it an excellent holiday home for taking the children as well. So relax and enjoy.

Location
Tangalla. About 2 hours from Galle

Sitting area
Comfortable sofas in a sitting area overlooking the garden and ocean beyond as well as the pool encourage reading time in the relative cool as well as a gathering area before dinner. This area blends into the verandah with planters chairs. Upstairs the balcony stretching the full length of the house provides a perfect place for secluded naps.

Dining area
A large wooden table situated in an open sided area looks across the garden out to sea. The staff will be happy to move it into the garden for alfresco diners should you desire it.

Kitchen / Staff
A large and modern kitchen is the home to the resident chef as well as to anyone who likes their food / cocktails prepared in special ways. The team of friendly staff is led by the wonderful Mendis who speaks fluent English. Previous visitors to SL may have met Mendis at a well known 'boutique' hotel and if so will appreciate his cocktail skills - he hasn't lost them. In Mendis's team there is a chef, houseboy and gardener.

Meals
Breakfast is provided. All other meals are for your own account. The nearest stores are about 40 minutes away in Matara, so it's best to stock up. On your first day head into Matara with Mendis, learn what is available and from then on, for refresher visits, you can send Mendis alone if you want. There is a fruit and veg market in Tangalla about 10 minutes away. Fish, crab, and lobster is delivered to the beach gate. Wine is not readily available but can be bought on this web site and delivered to you.

Pool
The emerald coloured pool provides a wonderful alternative to the ocean.

Area
If you are not satisfied with simply lying around on the beach then Maharalla provides the perfect base for several fascinating trips. For a day trip visit the game reserve of Uda Walawe, full of elephant and a large selection of rare and migrating birds. There is a professionally managed turtle sanctuary nearby. Large reclining Buddhas and Buddhist paintings can be found in the Buddhist temple complex built into the mountainside at Mulkirigala (about 16km from Tangalla). At the top of this complex high on the rock sits a temple that affords spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. Kataragama (about 70km from Tangalla) is one of the most important religious sites in SL. Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus all make offering here and in July / August the Hindu festival draws thousands. The vast Yala National Park is another day trip option although to get the benefit of the Park an overnight stay is advised. Maharalla literally means 'big wave', and the sea whilst commanding respect provides ample play opportunities. There is plenty to do in and around this fabulous villa so for a full Sri Lanka experience this is for you.

No of bedrooms

Sleeps 10 + 1.
There are 4 double bedrooms, 1 twin and 1 small single suitable for a nanny or child. Of the double rooms the master is upstairs and shares a large balcony with the twin room. The other three are downstairs - two are at the sea end of the house and the other looking inland over a small lagoon. From three double rooms and the twin room the sound of the sea replaces counting sheep if you find it difficult to find the arms of blissful slumber

Bathrooms
With the exception of the single room all bedrooms have ensuite bathroom. The master room has a large bathroom with a centrally located tub allowing you to gaze out to sea whilst you bathe. Downstairs the 2 doubles share an outdoor large sunken tub.
