The Luangwa Valley is one of Africa’s prime wildlife sanctuaries, with a variety and concentration of game and birdlife that have made it world famous. This is the landscape of the ‘Real Africa’, with herds of antelope sheltering under thorn trees, or roaming the plains, predators skulking in the shadows and primordial drama in every vale. Luwi is a seasonal bush camp nestled under huge mahogany trees on the banks of a permanent lagoon. It is situated deep in the heart of the National Park and is one of the only Luangwa safari camps to be positioned well away from the permanent waters and rich vegetation of the main river. The Camp lies close to a large lagoon which attracts lots of game to the area. It is the most rustic of the Kapani bush camps and the bar and dining area are in the shade of mahogany trees. Accommodation is in four huts that are made of grass and thatch with polished mud floors. Each room is designed differently utilising trees and natural vegetation wherever possible. The design of these rooms lends the camp a rustic appeal and provides a truly African bush experience. It is best to combine at least two of the bush camps, as the terrain and bush is very varied in the South Luangwa. If you decide to walk between camps it usually takes about 3 hours, and your bags will be carried by vehicle and will be waiting for you on arrival at your next bush camp. If you prefer not to walk you can always transfer in the vehicle. There are three other walking bushcamps: Mchenja, Nsolo and Kakuli, and the permanent camp at Kapani Lodge. WILDLIFE SAFARIS Game viewing is in open 4 wheel drive vehicles or on foot, with activities being tailored around your requirements. Game viewing is exceptionally good during the dry winter months of June through October. Sightings of lion and leopard are common. Puku, while not widely distributed in Africa, are common in the Luangwa. With over 400 resident species, the Luangwa is a wonderful place to see birds at any time of the year. However, during the wet months, from November to March, many migrants arrive and the Luangwa becomes a Mecca for birders.
Luwi and the other three bush camps all specialize in walking safaris. They are only open from June until November. The camps are close enough together to enable you to walk from camp to camp in just a few hours.
