Lewa Safari Camp, Laikipia, Kenya

Highly Recommended

Situated on the Laikipia Plateau at 4,500 to 6,500 feet (1,400-2,000 metres) above sea level, Lewa provides an unforgettable combination of spectacular scenery, hospitality, privacy and abundant wildlife....

The Laikipia Plateau has the most perfect climate with days usually hot and dry and the nights quite cool.  Lewa is also malaria-free.  Clothing should be cool for the day and warm for the evening. A windcheater or fleece are essential, as are good walking shoes.

Lewa Tented Camp, Kenya

Lewa Tented Camp, Kenya

The camp's excellent chefs produce delicious, freshly cooked home fare, with emphasis on locally available ingredients.  Adjoining the dining area is a warm and cosy lounge, which overlooks a floodlit waterhole where wildlife comes to drink, and in the evening guests sit around a campfire under the stars.

Lewa's wildlife density is as high as anywhere in Africa, and it is possible for visitors staying a few days to see all of Africa's 'Big Five'.  Endangered species to be found include black and white rhinos and Grevy's zebra, and the rare sitatunga semi-aquatic antelope can also be seen.  Lewa's birdlife is also exceptional, with over 350 species occurring in the area.
