Lalibela Game Reserve, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Recommended

Lalibela Game Reserve is located in the malaria-free Eastern Cape and is an hour's drive to the east of Port Elizabeth.  It consists of 18,500 acres (7,500 hectares) and spans 5 ecosystems (valley bushveld, savannah grassland, fynbos, riverine forest and acacia woodland), resulting in a breath-taking diversity of flora and fauna.

The reserve is home to the Big 5 (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo & leopard) and all animals, including the predators, are free-roaming throughout the entire reserve.  (In addition, African wild dogs were released on the reserve in January 2006).  Lalibela brings you the charm of authentic Africa and is a perfect blend of the formal and informal.

Accommodation is in three lodges - Lentaba Lodge, Mark's Camp and Tree Tops - all offering decor that is infused with the essence of Africa, as well as warm and friendly service and unforgettable game viewing.  Whilst the standard of accommodation at all three lodges is the same, the number of rooms varies from 5 to 8 and each has its own unique character (for example, Marks Camp has excellent facilities for children and has 4 family units, whilst Tree Tops is of pole-and-canvas under thatch construction and has a honeymoon suite).   At all three lodges, secluded thatched chalets are placed where magnificent indigenous gardens merge into the surrounding bush.

Each en-suite unit has a private observation deck to make the most of the views.  The lodges also have a large lounge, viewing deck and a sunny swimming pool where guests can spend a lazy afternoon.  In addition, each has an outdoor dining 'boma' for fireside dinners and open-air brunches, as well as a stylish indoor dining area.  At Lalibela, food is true safari cuisine with an emphasis on local specialties, ranging from centuries-old recipes to exciting contemporary African dishes.

Game drives in an open vehicle with an experienced game ranger go out in the early morning and late afternoon and bring guests face to face with a multitude of game species, ranging from mighty elephant, lion, rhino and buffalo to tiny blue duiker and rock hyrax.  Lalibela is also home to cheetah, hyena, hippo, giraffe, zebra, warthog and numerous species of antelope, such as eland, kudu, bushbuck and wildebeest.  Night drives are also offered, to search for the elusive bat-eared fox, aardvark, black-backed jackal, aardwolf and the curious spring hare.

In addition to the game activities, Lalibela offers a wedding co-ordination service, with a choice of locations for the ceremony and ample dedicated space for receptions.  Please ask for details.
