Ecca Lodge, Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, Eastern Cape

Highly recommended

The perfect add-on to an itinerary featuring Cape Town and the Garden Route, and just two hours drive from Port Elizabeth, Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is located in the beautiful and historically rich Eastern Cape. The region is steeped in history and culture stretching back to the San and Khoi peoples, whose legacy of rock paintings, artefacts and stone tools are of great importance.  The touch of the 1820 Settlers is everywhere - from the beautiful architecture and art in towns like Grahamstown and Fort Beaufort to the colonial furniture and fittings that were brought to manor houses.  The Kwandwe reserve covers 54,362 acres of exclusive, malaria-free wilderness and features 30 km of privately owned river frontage of the Great Fish River.  There are four separate lodges on the reserve, all with a highly distinctive character and all offering the same exceptional levels of service and welcome. (See also Great Fish River Lodge,  Uplands Homestead and Melton Manor).  Ecca Lodge is fun, flamboyant and fabulous, with a "funk-meets-futuristic-farmhouse" ambience. It is set in spectacular African wilderness surrounds, and has a revolutionary design of stone-and-mesh gabion walls, sliding glass, timber and gauze doors and corrugated iron roofing.

Accommodation is in six spacious air conditioned suites featuring bedrooms with ensuite bathroom, indoor and outdoor shower, separate w.c, twin hand basin, large verandah and a private deck and plunge pool. An indoor sitting area can comfortably convert into accommodation for children 11 years and younger. Interior design reflects natural textures in hues of burnt aloe orange, rust and olive. Furnishings combine clean, contemporary sofas with venerable old collectables from the area.

Overlooking rolling spekboom valleys, guest areas comprise a spacious sitting room with fireplace, dining room and bar area and deep veranda with expansive viewing decks. Delicious fresh farm cuisine is prepared in the modern, open-plan kitchen and an interpretive centre provides hours of entertainment for children of all ages.

Kwandwe’s wilderness offers a range of safari adventures.  Experienced rangers and Xhosa trackers lead interpretive, twice-daily game-drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles, bringing guests close to Africa’s Big Five.  Night drives regularly encounter fascinating nocturnal animals such as aardvark, aardwolf, porcupine, Cape fox, bat-eared fox and springhare.   Guided bush walks bring guests face-to-face with wild Africa at its best. Hiking in the field is especially rewarding for those interested in birds and vegetation, and fishing is always available for enthusiasts (Kwandwe supports 'tag and release' procedures).
