Kosi Forest Lodge, KwaZulu-Natal

Recommended

Kosi Forest Lodge is located in the Kosi Bay Nature Reserve, a pristine wilderness situated in the northeast corner of KwaZulu Natal.  This unspoiled nature reserve surrounds the rare and beautiful Kosi Bay lake system and is incorporated into the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, an internationally recognised World Heritage Site.  The 30km-long reserve is a tropical paradise of crystal clear water, marshland, swamp, undisturbed beaches, bush and coastal forests that is home to hippo, water mongoose, otter and about 250 species of bird.

Kosi Forest Lodge is the only private lodge in the reserve and is located in a tranquil sand forest alongside one of the lakes. The16-bed Lodge offers excellent accommodation, fine cuisine and is the perfect base from which to explore this rare ecosystem.  Accommodation consists of 8 thatched bush suites, hidden under peaceful shady trees and raised on a wooden deck with a beautifully appointed bedroom, balcony, dressing room and separate bath and shower. The en-suite bathroom is open-air in a reed-enclosed boma. The bedrooms have low wooden walls with mosquito netting and roll-up canvas blinds allowing for full views of the surrounding forest. There is also a secluded honeymoon suite.

The main lodge, lounge, diningroom and bar, all open onto a large, wooden deck around a massive Zulu Podberry tree. The Lodge takes full advantage of Maputuland’s sultry weather with most meals served alfresco - on the deck or under large Albizia trees. There is also a  swimming pool, built into the deck, at the lake’s edge.

The best way to explore Kosi Bay Nature Reserve is by water.  Day long boat cruises are available, as are guided explorations by canoe, paddling through the lakes, channels and Raffia Forest of this water wonderland.  Birdwatching is exceptional and the lake is home to Pel’s Fishing Owl and the Palm Nut Vulture, the only fruit-eating vulture in the world. The lodge also offers guided walking trails through the reserve.  The mouth of the Kosi Lakes is regarded as one of the best snorkeling sites anywhere in the world and the rock pools along this protected stretch of coastline are a virtual aquarium of brilliant sub-tropical fish. Enjoy swimming in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and soak up the sun along this beautiful stretch of beach.  Fishing is also offered, either in the lakes, from the beach or from deep sea charters.
