Kitich Camp lies in the southern part of the Mathews mountain range, a remote and rarely visited area of Kenya that rises from the desert country to the north. Best accessed by plane from Nairobi or Nanyuki. This is a unique camp in that it provides only close quarter walking safaris (no game drives as such) and refreshingly ...no early rises!. The walking safaris are conducted by the charismatic and delightful Giulio Bertoli who also owns and runs the camp. The area is criss-crossed by 40 miles of tracks from which game viewing is undertaken to spot big game and in particular elephant and buffalo. There are never more than 8 people are in the tented camp which has 4 delightful large en suite tents with bucket showers. A tent....well a very smart one with comfortable beds, cotton sheets, table and chairs, a verandah, hurricane lamps, an en suite shower and loo. Kitich Camp nestles in a valley of verdant fig trees, indigenous flowering shrubs and prehistoric cycad palms on a bank of the seasonal Ngeng river and is surrounded by thickly wooded hillsides and craggy peaks. There are many magnificent cycad in the area which are frequently described as "living fossils", partly because they appear to have passed through some 200 million years of Earth's history in relatively unchanged form. The people of the southern Mathews are the pastoral Samburu and Soyei who used to gather in the upper valley of the Ngeng River for feasting, singing and dancing. Here they were always assured of water and grazing for their cattle and honey for making beer. They called it Kitich, which means the place of happiness. WILDLIFE Kitich camp is a lush oasis amid dry surroundings. The wild animals of the region have found refuge from the competition of domestic animals in the valleys. Elephant, lion, leopard, greater kudu, waterbuck, forest hog and buffalo are among the species to be found here together with over 200 species of birds. Kitich camp is a base for one of the official Rhino Protection Units in the area. Everywhere is lush forest full of flowers, insects and the biggest, brightest butterflies imaginable. |

| Style | Private tented camp for walking safaris and exploring the bush with a private guide and Samburu trackers. The meals in camp are reminiscent of Tuscan cuisine using Giulio's olive oil produced on his farm in Italy.
| | Seasonality | Kitich is closed 30th March - 30th June and 30th October to 15th December due to rains and that somebody has to pick and select the olives in Italy! | | Activities | Because of the absence of roads, except for the link with the airstrip, there are no game drives at Kitich Camp. Instead you can enjoy the unique opportunity to walk in the forest in the company of an expert guide and armed ranger game stalking and tracking.. There are several walks, ranging from the very gentile to the vigorous. Natural swimming pool, isolated fishing hole full for catfish and barbel, bush picnics, local Samburu families and complete remoteness. |
