Kangaluna & Gawler Ranges Safaris - South Australia

Highly Recommended

A wonderful casual tented camp where your private guide and host, Geoff Scholz, was born and brought up in the area and has an intimate knowledge of the local bush. His camp on a private concession at the edge of the Gawler Ranges National Park, is built and run on ecological principles, using natural air flows for ventilation and capturing rainwater naturally. Three large en suite safari tents have been designed in tune with the local environment and with comfort in mind. In the evening settle in to a BBQ dinner and a glass of wine with the sounds of the bush all around you and the stories of your guide for entertainment.

The Gawler Ranges are home to a profusion of wildlife, in numbers rarely seen elsewhere in Australia. With gorges, weathered rocky outcrops and seasonal waterfalls, the area has an extraordinary range of wildly beautiful outback country. The contrasting colours of the red outback sands, clear blue skies and the glistening white of Lake Gairdner’s massive salt pan is one of the great but rarely visited sights of the Australian outback. It is also one of the few places in the country where you can expect to see the three largest macropods (Red kangaroo, Grey kangaroo and Euro or Common Wallaroo) in the one area, and you may well see them in their hundreds.

FACILITIES

StyleCasual Tented Bush Camp with Excellent Host & Guiding
Accommodation

Each of the 3 large en suite tents has a queen size bed made from local mallee wood and with mosquito netting that is rarely required and a separate zipped room between that and the bathroom, which has 2 single beds in providing an excellent option for families. There is at least 50 yards separating each tent so privacy is assured.  The en suite bathroom looks out into the bush behind the tent, with solar powered hot water.  Water is very scarce in this environment and all the water used is collected as rainwater.

Dining

The dining tent and kitchen are the focal point of the camp and look out across the surrounding mallee country.  Meals are wholesome meals cooked by your guide and often eaten around the camp fire under a canopy of stars that stretch across the sky.  BBQ steaks are a regular feature at dinner while breakfast is fully cooked.  Lunches are generally a picnic taken out on safari for the day and wine and beer is provided in camp at dinner.

ChildrenChildren are welcome on the safaris though it is not recommended for very small children as there are no facilities as such that cater for them.
Activities
  • Wildlife viewing - it is possible to see hundreds of kangaroos on a day’s safari, such is the profusion of wildlife. This includes Red and Western Grey Kangaroos and Euros (Common Wallaroo) and in the more remote parts of the ranges, Yellow-footed Rock Wallabies. The area also has a large population of emus and Hairy-nosed Wombats.
  • Bird watching - parrots, finches, eagles are just some of the 146 bird species that have been recorded in the area
A day trip to Lake Gairdner, one of the largest salt pans in Australia which stretches for over 100 kms northwards, is an extraordinary experience
  • Visit the Organ Pipes,a dramatic geological formation from a long gone age of volcanic activity in the area
The Sturt Lakes are close by the camp and they provide fabulous evening vistas and wildlife, stop at natural ochre pits for face painting the Aboriginal way
  • The area is rich in Aboriginal heritage and sites and your guide will have some of the stories to tell
  • In September/October, a carpet of wildflowers stretches across the grasslands.
Climate

The best months to visit are Apr/May and Sep-Dec. The mid winter months of Jun & Jul can see temperatures below zero at night, while the mid-summer months regularly sees the temperature over 40º.

Location

Kangaluna Camp is approximately 30 kms outside of Wudinna in South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula and a 3 hour drive from Port Lincoln, the nearest regional airport. Port Lincoln is a 40 minute from Adelaide by scheduled service. Alternatively, a private charter flight from Adelaide Airport to Wudinna is just 1 hour.

The Gawler Ranges is situated on a significant ecological line, which divides the fauna of eastern and western Australia, with species of bird that are not found only a few kilometers to the west. The geology of the ranges dates back as much as 1,500 million years and was the site of a massive meteor impact hundreds of million years back.
