This classic safari lodge offers guests every comfort, while being situated in one of Africa’s ecologically unspoilt wilderness areas. The Lodge is set in the riverside forest on the banks of the Luangwa River overlooking the South Luangwa National Park - one of Zambia's prime game viewing areas. The Park has year-round access and Kafunta River Lodge therefore stays open for 12 months of the year. Accommodation is in 8 private chalets and 2 luxury suites. All rooms are very spacious and have electric fans, fully ensuite bathrooms with hot and cold running water, and a private veranda with stunning views. Central to the lodge is the traditionally thatched bar/dining area, which is built around a semi-evergreen wild mango tree and offers superb panoramic views over the Luangwa River and the South Luangwa National Park. Great game viewing and bird watching from the lodge is guaranteed. Adjacent to the bar is a swimming pool and the only natural hot spring tub in the Luangwa Valley. This unique hot tub is fed from a source on Kafunta’s grounds, offering a constant temperature of 38 degrees.
The South Luangwa National Park is a great place to discover the untouched African wilderness, and is truly one of Africa’s best hidden secrets. It is 9,050 square km in size and home to over 420 species of birds and over 60 species of mammals, including some unique to the Luangwa Valley like the Thornicroft giraffe and the Cookson wildebeest. The park is renowned for its high population of leopards, as well as large herds of elephant, and great numbers of hippo and crocodile in the river. Lions are commonly seen and prides can include up to 20 animals. From Kafunta, game drives go out twice a day, with the afternoon drive continuing into a night drive after a break for sundowners. From 1st June to 31st October, walking safaris are also offered, with qualified and highly experienced safari guides and armed National Park rangers escorting guests safely into the true and unspoilt African bush. The South Luangwa National Park has over 420 of Zambia's 732 species of birds, and so, whatever the season, is an excellent bird watching destination. The lodge also arranges guided cultural visits to the local Kuanda community.| Style | Classic safari lodge | | Air/Con | No but fans in rooms | | Dining | Yes | | Children | Yes | | No. of Bedrooms | 8 double chalets and 2 luxury suites | | Pool | Yes and natural hot spring tub | | Activities | Game drives, night drives, walking safaris, bird watching, cultural visits | | Price Range | From US$300 per person per night, sharing.
