Jack's Camp, Makgadikgadi, Botswana

Highly Recommended

Situated on the edge of the great Makgadikgadi Pans Jacks camp has ten roomy and stylish canvas tents, positioned for maximum privacy and perfect views, each with en-suite bathrooms and indoor and outdoor showers. The tents are fashioned in classical style and are extreemly comfortable with Persian rugs underfoot and cool cotton sheets which form a striking contrast with this rugged wilderness. There is nowhere like Jacks,...its rustic but elegant and... completely differant.

A relic of one of the world’s largest super-lakes, the Makgadikgadi, which dried up thousands of years ago, provides a facinating and absorbing location in wich to explore.A safari to Jack's Camp is a complete desert experience focusing on species unique to the area such as aardvark, gemsbuck and springbuck. It is the only place where guests are virtually guaranteed to see the rare and elusive brown hyaena and be able to walk through the Kalahari with a gang of habituated but, wild meerkats! This is not a big five safari destination though.

You can venture far into the centre of the Makgadikgadi, on 4wd quad bikes, explore remote archaeological sites where periodically there have been discoveries of fossil beds of extinct giant zebra and hippo. The fact that you can travel across the pans at great speed and still arrive nowhere only underlines the pans immensity.

During the wet season November to March the landscape transforms. Clouds of flamingo and other migratory birds descend from the heavens to decorate the watery grasslands. Herds of zebra and wildebeest materialise, drawn by the lush grass, and for several months, the desert is teeming with game and predators.

The guides at Jack's are an erudite breed. Often graduate students who combine research with guiding, they team up with a small group of Zu/’hoasi Bushmen to guide guests on a morning’s walks, desert excursions and game drives.

ActivitiesIn the wet season, the pans fill with water forming one of the most important wetland sites in Africa attracting huge flocks of flamingo and the last surviving zebra and wildebeest migration in Southern Africa.  Zoologist/Biologist guides emphasise the adaptations of desert wildlife such as the rare brown hyena to the area on game walks and drives.  In the dry season, venture into the impenetrable pans on 4WD quad bikes to explore remote archaeological sites.
