The park extends to some 1945 sq.kms. of undulating country and consists of a buffer zone surrounding an inner core area of 940 sq.kms. of sal and bamboo forests, meandering river valleys, vast meadows and high plateaus. Today, the park is home to 22 species of mammal, including over 100 tigers, the rarely sighted nocturnal sloth bear and the once almost extinct hard-ground-adapted swamp deer or barasingha, now found only at Kanha. Also present are: langur, wild pig, chital, sambhar, Indian wild dog, barking deer, gaur, Indian fox, jungle cat and wolf. In addition, the reserve has recorded sightings of over 220 bird species. This is one of India's most picturesque tiger reserves and is one of the finest locations in which to view the highly endangered Royal Bengal tiger. |
