Access to much more of the sub-continent has become easier following recent improvements to the country's infrastructure in terms of roads and frequency of scheduled flights. In the north, India offers the Himalayas (outstanding walks well off the beaten track with comfy accommodation in unspoilt villages), Ancient and modern Delhi, Rajasthan with its palaces and deserts and the majestic Taj Mahal. In the west and central districts there are ancient forts and palaces around which a plethora of attractions can be found including religious and cultural festivals, magnificent temples, ancient cities, wildlife safaris and game parks. We can guide you though this miasma of choice and recommend some pretty special places, many of which remain in private ownership, and that are well away from the tourist trail. Some of these hideaways include opulent former residences of the great Maharajah's through to more simple but no less attractive private boutique hotels and game lodges.  To the south west, around Cochin, the rivers, inland waterways, lakes, ghats and beaches of Kerala beckon and where some time aboard a Kettuvalam (converted rice boat) offers utter tranquility. Elsewhere private guided walks through the jungle or around exotic spice plantations provide a sniff the regions rich colonial past or head for the famous beaches along the coast from Goa south to Thiruvananthapuram.
