Highland Wild Escapes, Southern Highlands,
Great Dividing Range, New South Wales.

Highly Recommended

The mountains immediately to west and south-west of Sydney provided an impenetrable barrier to the early settlers. Now just two hours from Sydney, the gorges and sandstone cliffs that dissect the Great Dividing Range provide some spectacular wilderness right on Sydney's doorstep. For those who like the outdoors it is here that you can experience some of the finest bush country in Australia…exclusively. The valleys harbour good numbers and variety of wildlife. Visitors will be rewarded with sightings of Grey kangaroo, wombat and platypus, as well as excellent trout fishing.

The best way to experience this area is with a local guide, whose knowledge of the bush tracks and rivers is second to none, and whose relationships with local property owners provides exclusive access to properties on the southern boundaries of the Blue Mountains National Park.

Host & Guide: Mark Tickner

No. of Bedrooms

Can be provided at a local inn, B&B or luxury hotel. However, the best way to experience the wilderness of the Southern Highlands is by "swagging" under the stars in a swag (very comfy bedroll with mattress/sheets) round the camp fire and an excellent bottle of wine. The whole experience is imaginatively hosted by Mark and his team. Comfortable tents are also provided with attached ablutions if required.

Dining

Excellent morning and afternoon teas, with muffins and homemade cakes. Picnic lunches with camp chairs and tables, a steak cooked over an open fire.

Activities

Fly fishing - the rivers and dams in the ranges are well stocked with brown and rainbow trout. Wildlife viewing, canoeing and swagging.

Wildlife viewing - large numbers of Grey kangaroos and wombats come out to graze at dusk and the rivers provide one of the best chances visitors have to spot a platypus and the only other monotreme, the echidna (a large porcupine with a bad-hairday). Excellent birdlife as well.

Access is also available by helicopter from Sydney and nearby hotels providing spectacular views of the mountains and gorges en route. Bush walking of varying lengths and canoeing are available for the more energetic.
