Hatari Game Lodge, Arusha National Park, Arusha, Tanzania

Highly Recommended

Hatari Lodge is located on the nothern edge of one of Africa’s most beautiful and diverse national parks. The Arusha National Park is roughly 150 square kilometres and consists of  craters, lakes, savannah, meadows and mountain forest. Although small, the Park has the highest giraffe population density in Africa. It is home to groups of forest elephants, plenty of buffaloes, numerous waterbuck, bushbucks, duikers and dik-diks. A major interst is its rich number in Primates especially the Black and White Colobus Monkeys and the shining Blue Monkeys, also called Sykes Monkeys, which are likely to be seen on game drives or walks in the park.

The lodge has unspoilt views of open plains and rain forests and beyond to Mount Meru which forms a stunning backdrop.  The lodge has been converted from the original farm buildings into a  “luxury bush hotel”, managed by Marlies and Jörg Gabriel. Hatari's accommodation consist of 8 comfortably furnished cottage rooms, each with an open fireplace and a spacious bathroom en suite.  Each room has been furnished and decorated in a modern retro style which gives a unique fresh feel.

The oldest building serves as a large central area.  Here you will find the dining room and long bar as well as a small, but informative library.  The breakfast terrace offers impressive views of Mt. Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro.  Directly below the terrace, lies the Momella clearing with a game viewing platform that is also perfect for an evening sundowner. Every day buffaloes and waterbuck feed close to the Lodge, warthogs dig around in the ground or mow the lawn, waterbirds enjoy the swampy areas and numerous giraffes come to visit at the doors of the lodge. Depending on the season, elephants make their way into the meadows, and on moon lit nights, with a little bit of luck, leopards, genets and civets may be seen.  In the trees around the lodge, there are bush babies . A “Hippo Pool”, a small lake inhabited permanently by hippos, is within walking distance.
