Escape to an island fantasy of the Swiss Family Robinson genre. Haggerstone truly deserves to be described as unique! An island of incredible beauty and wilderness, the small lodge, owned and hosted by Roy & Anna Turner, offers guests unparalleled remoteness, cast-away comfort and exclusivity. Roy and Anna have made Haggerstone their home since 1985 when Roy abandoned his days of crocodile hunting in Papua New Guinea.
Anna and Roy will host your stay - planning your days and preparing meals to suit you. Seafood fresh from the surrounding waters and fresh herbs and fruit are served in the Main Pavilion around a communal table. The garden is a lovely place for a wander …passionfruit compete with guado and snake beans.
This is the perfect place for relaxation but when the mood to be active and adventurous strikes there are plenty of options – snorkelling, fishing, exploring the coastal rivers and mangroves, visiting silica dunes, checking out a shipwreck and bird watching. Optional activities can be arranged including helicopter picnics.FACILITIES | Accommodation | Haggerstone has four quite different ‘huts’ – each is serviced daily, has hot & cold running water, fridge, shower and toilet, but there the similarities end. Each ‘hut’ is unique - there is that word again but in this case it is justified! The Lagoon Hut is a timber round house with an expansive deck overlooking the big lagoon, the Kwila Hut is shaded by Coral trees, decks that look to the reef and contains an interesting collection of New Guinea artefacts, the Beach House is more secluded and rustic and is constructed mainly of driftwood and there is the Tree House.
The Main Pavilion -a large building constructed of big poles heavy beams & rafters a thatched roof with 12 inch thick Alang Alang grass imported from Bali. Driftwood has been skilfully used to support heavy polished timber benches. Every nook and cranny contains an eye catching relic from the husk of a Papuan Canoe to ancient dinner gong and crocodile head. meals are shared here, at a large communal table or around the open fire. There is also a library with comfortable couches and a daybed, a bar, two bathrooms and the open plan kitchen. The Jetty – is a gorgeous place to sit, relax and watch the schools of fish, the jetty has a thatched roof, a cooking fire and overlooks the big lagoon. | | Dining | The main living area is a large timber room, with open kitchen, dining area and library. Food is mostly home-produced and is predominantly fish locally caught and freshly cooked. Haggerstone's host's love of food and a commitment to freshness and simplicity have guided their cuisine. The sand cay is the ultimate dining area.....Candle lit table, setting sun and the calming swish of a darkening sea. The sea here is bountiful and with the island’s high rainfall it is the perfect place to grow fruit and vegetables - the garden is a pleasure to walk through. | | Activities | On Haggerstone, be as active or as relaxed as you wish … - Snorkel amongst pristine coral reefs
