Haggerstone is a remote, exclusive and unique wilderness site. From swimming amongst pristine coral reefs to dining on uninhabited sand cays, everything from your accommodation in the huts built by Roy, to the fish caught in the sea and the fruit from their orchard is fresh in style. Roy and Anna Turner have made it their home since 1985, when Roy abandoned his days of crocodile hunting in Papua New Guinea. They have created a paradise of their own which, together with their intimate knowledge of the area, makes for one of Australia’s greatest natural experiences. This coastline is not without its adventure – the river estuaries contain huge estuarine crocodiles; sharks patrol the deeper channels between the reefs; majestic sea eagles patrol the skies for their prey. | No. of Bedrooms | There are four individual ‘houses’ ranging in style from the Robinson Crusoe Beach House to the Tree House built amongst the forest canopy. Each is uniquely decorated with local artefacts, shells, driftwood, and a wooden deck provides views to the ocean. A generator operates fans in the rooms and mosquito nets cover the beds. Bathroom facilities are ensuite and open into the surrounding vegetation. | | Dining | The main living area is a large timber room, with open kitchen, dining area and library. Food is mostly home-produced and is predominantly fish locally caught and freshly cooked. | | Activities | Reef snorkelling in the lagoon on Haggerstone Island. Trips to the outer reef where there is a huge variety of marine life (turtles, sharks, rays, dolphins) to be seen. A large number of birds are resident on the island and can be seen from short walks around the island or, for the more energetic, by climbing over the top of the island. Explore the rivers and mangroves on the mainland, or the silica dunes in Shelburne Bay or try your luck at fishing – they’ll supply the hand lines. |
