GUNYA TITJIKALA CAMP & ABORIGINAL COMMUNITY, NORTHERN TERRITORIES

 Recommended

Gunya Titjikala provides a mix of luxury tented accommodation and an exclusive and unique insight into a fascinating and ancient Aboriginal community who own the property in conjunction with a professional hotelier.

The people of Titjikala belong to the Arrente, Luritja and Pitjantjatjara groups and are ex-workers (or the family of ex-workers) on Maryvale cattle Station. People started coming to the area in the 1950s when the mission truck visited every 6 weeks. In 1953 there were only 6 people living in what is now known as Titjikala. Now there are over 300 people in the community.

Accommodation consists of only 3 luxury safari tents overlooking the wild and unspoilt Simpson Desert which provides the most spectacular views, dawns and sunsets. Each tent has an en suite bathroom stocked with organic Gunya Skin & Body products, expansive decking for relaxing, an extensive Aboriginal library and complimentary billy tea and coffee.
Fine European food is served with a hint of locally produced game meats and is prepared by the resident Chef and “bush tucker” specialist, but don't worry normal diets are also easily catered for. Alcohol is not provided or sold at the camp in respect of aboriginal requests. However, guests are free to bring their own beer or wine for consumption in the camp.

Activities include visiting the Aboriginal community and school, visiting a nearby Aboriginal art centre which sends paintings to collectors around the world, sharing moving and spiritual “Gunya River Dreaming” (dreamtime stories) with elders from the community, a bush medicine demonstration, bush tucker gathering and tasting, visiting nearby rock art sites and immersing yourself in the surrounding culture. Guided nature walks led by community leaders demonstrate the exceptionally close link the Aboriginal people have with this harsh landscape. The community benefits directly from your stay.

This is a distinctly different cultural experience and gives only 6 visitors at a time a noncommercial insight in to the ways and wonders of Aboriginal society. This is a unique partnership and the community benefits directly from your stay. Highly recommended.
