Check Hotel/Lodge Availability

Grootbos Lodge, Western Cape, South Africa

The Best

This, in our considered view, is one of the finest private nature reserves in Africa. The stone-and-timber Grootbos Lodge and it sister the new Forest Lodge lie amidst a spectacular private nature reserve in the fynbos-clad hills above Walker Bay on the southern Cape coast. The lodge has outstanding views of the dunes, sea and distant Cape of Good Hope. Not only is Grootbos a very fine reserve it is also an excellent small hotel with well appointed double cottages and two bedded family cottages spread over the estate gardens and in the milkwood forests. All cottages have private wooden decks providing panoramic sea and mountain views. Each bedroom has an en suite bathroom and all cottages have their own sitting rooms with open fireplaces.

Fynbos bloom

Grootbos Lodge, Western Cape, South Africa

The main buildings open out onto a large wooden deck adjacent to the good sized swimming pool that has lots of comfy chairs in secluded nooks behind rock outcrops and abundant vegetation, ideal for a good book or an afternoon snooze. The restaurant specializes in seafood such as crayfish and line fish, complemented by a wide selection of excellent regional wines. The vineyards are only 40 minutes drive away. You can explore the hills and coastal forest, which are clad in one of the world's richest floras called Fynbos (the smallest of the world 5 plant kingdoms), all adjacent to spectacular marine life. The lodge provides guides including botanist, ornithologist, archaeologist and a marine biologist. August and September is the flowering season and particularly special. August to December is the whale watching season. Note: The lodge is closed in June and July.
