Galdessa, Tsavo East National Park, Kenya

Recommended

Galdessa is a special place.  Its magic is tangible. The Galana River flows by, refreshing in the middle of the heat - and the wind ruffles the doum palm leaves over the bandas.  This is a remote place, off the beaten track, where peace wraps around you like a blanket.

A safari with Galdessa is a private experience.  It is a series of naturally occurring events cherished by those seeking intimacy with Mother nature, in the pristine wilderness of the largest wildlife reserve in Kenya - a series of events engineered by Galdessa to dress each day of your safari in a new colour.

There is no need, however, to sacrifice any of the creature comforts we are all used to...  East Africa's best cuisine, polite and smiling service, and comfortable accommodation in authentic, yet luxurious bandas - in a camp designed to favour privacy.

Truly an Eco-Tourism camp, Galdessa recycles its waste, uses solar power, and has even installed a water treatment plant.

WILDLIFE
Galdessa Camp is situated on the banks of the Catana river, in the middle of Kenya's largest national park, the immense and untamed Tsavo East - The Elephant Park.

This unique river location is the theatre for some of Tsavo's best wildlife sightings as elephant, rhino, buffalo and antelope come to drink - white predators lurk in the shade.  The wildlife here has remained very wild -less disturbed by safaris due to the sheer size of the territory, and the difficult access to its center.

Through the years, Galdessa has supported many local conservation projects, and a stay with us provides you with the unique chance to see some of the few free-ranging black rhinos that have established their territories in the camp's vicinity, following a successful re-introduction program.

FACILITIES
A great deal of importance is placed on 'creature comforts' here in the middle of the wilderness.  Superb cuisine, a broad array of activities, expert guides and trackers, security and discrete service make it all an unforgettable experience.  The camp's twenty staff members ensure that you are cared for twenty four hours a day.

TRANSFER
Though the camp is easily accessed by road, the camp's airstrip is just an hour's flight from Kenya's major cities.

No. of Bedrooms

Staying here is a private experience, and at Galdessa we take great care to preserve this intimacy.  Catering to a maximum of sixteen guests, the eight bandas are placed at a good distance from one another.  The Honeymoon Banda is located well away from the rest of the camp, with its own viewing platform, sitting room, and even a water wallow.

Each Banda combines the best that the traditional tented camp and the permanent lodge have to offer.  Facing the river, it is built on a timber floor under a thatched roof, with a canvas front that opens onto a veranda during the day - and is zipped closed at night.

Inside, through the use of natural materials in the spacious living area and bathroom, an authentic contact is maintained with the natural world outside - stone sink and tables, ostrich-egg lamps, and enormous beds made out of natural wood from the park.

Bandas are equipped with solar electricity and running water - though the shower is fed by a canvas drum in true safari tradition, with water - whenever you need it - at your preferred temperature.

Activities

One day it could be a surprise bush breakfast, another day a breathtaking sunset viewed from high on top of the world's oldest fossilized lava flow, drink in hand.  It may just be the fearful joy of interrupting one of our scenic walking safaris to fish under the cold eye of the crocodiles, or it could be the sudden appearance of the fearsome Tsavo lions in the beam of our spotlight on a night game drive.

Whether on foot - or in one of our open Land Cruisers - a  journey to this wild and untamed part of Africa will become part of your lifetime memories.
