Fundu Lagoon, Pemba Island, Zanzibar

Highly Recommended

Fundu Lagoon is situated on Pemba Island, the sister island to Zanzibar, on a remote and beautiful beach on the south western side of the island. The lodge's location and style make it unique with the emphasis on comfort and relaxation in a bare foot style rather than 5 star luxury.

The main hotel is built under thatch and is large and airy and overlooks the sea. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the main dining area or at the jetty bar with a three course lunch and dinner, all with a choice of dishes of international standard. Some meals will be served on the white sandy beach. There are two bars, one of which is situated a third of the way along a long jetty which stretches way out into the sea. The lodge has a treatment room where a variety of massage and beauty therapies are available.

Fundu is the epitome of a "bare foot paradise" with a distinct Robinson Crusoe air in a remote and peaceful location. It is a place for guests to relax and unwind in casual, yet stylish surroundings.

Activities

Fundu Lagoon is listed as one of the top diving locations in the world, with a fully-equipped PADI diving Centre and a wide range of water sports including snorkelling, windsurfing, water-skiing and canoe safaris into the mangroves. A luxury 30ft Catamaran is also available for charter, as well as daily sunset sails on an 11m dhow boat. Fishing is sometimes available but must be arranged prior to arrival. Beach walks are very rewarding with excellent birdlife, crabs, insects, shells, starfish and mudskippers. In season you can visit the nesting turtles, or trips can be arranged to Ngezi Forest and a local village. Guests should be aware that, as on any Zanzibar beach, the tide can go out a long way. At such times the lodge can arrange for day and half day boat trips to the adjacent Mesali Island Reserve and beach. The lodge has an excellent community relationship. Donations by guests and the lodge have helped to build a local village school and to support local start-ups.
