Elephant Pepper Camp, Masai Mara, Kenya

The Best

It is here, on the Masai Mara, that the greatest migration on the planet takes place from July to October.  Every year two million wildebeest, interspersed by herds of zebra, cross the Mara River from Tanzania to eat the lush grass resulting from the seasonal "long rains" in Kenya.  It is this display which lures people and predators to this place, but there is more to the Mara than this annual spectacle – this fascinating eco-system is home to enormous herds of plains game, the Big Cats and Elephant as well as colourful birds, small game, riverine wildlife and stunning scenery.

Elephant Pepper Camp is located in the middle of this 3600 sq km wilderness. It is situated within the protected Koiyaki wilderness area, away from other lodges. In order to preserve this special area the camp is seasonal and is completely dismantled for three months of the year. The spacious canvas tents, with an en suite dressing room, flush loos and safari showers are comfortably furnished. Nothing rivals sitting around the campfire enjoying the sounds of the African night. Extended game drives each day and some night game drives make game viewing a complete experience. Elephant Pepper Camp brings people back to nature, no generator, no traffic, no permanent structures obstructing your view, just the sights and sounds of the African bush.

You are looked after by attentive staff who bring steaming hot water for your canvas showers, prepare sumptuous meals and offer your favourite "sundowner" cocktail.  Every comfort is assured, your every need catered for.  Yet, at the end of the season, when the camp is dismantled there is no sign that man has disturbed the serenity of the surroundings.

Each day brings a surprise, whether it is a bush breakfast prepared by the camp staff, a night drive or interaction between wildlife.  The wildlife is unequalled in all the world.  Herds roam at will and graze seemingly content, but always on the lookout for predators: lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena.

This is an original bush camp, eco-friendly, committed to finding a way of life that does not harm the wilderness, revenue from the camp goes back to the local community. Elephant Pepper Camp is put up for the season and then packed away to leave no trace behind. The homely atmosphere of this camp is part of its charm.
